Uvvy island in SL
From Translook
uvvy island is the name of the first transhumanist meeting point in SL, 2006-2007. Many of the first transhumanist events in Second Life were hosted here - see 2006 and 2007. All relevant content of the uvvy website has been copied to Translook.
The uvvy is the ultimate p2p communication device invented by the mathematician, computer scientist and science fiction writer Rudy Rucker. The uvvy does not exist yet but maybe coming soon. Rudy is one of my favorite writers - I own the domain names uvvy.com and uvvy.net and I am using them with his permission.
Uvvys are ubiquitous communication devices that can generate holographic displays in the air and can also interface to neural pathways (that's why uvvys should be worn on the neck): in a sexual experience mediated by technology, a participant may not be actually aware of her/his real situation but be immersed in a sexual dream generated by the uvvy and perhaps of a radically different nature link.
In RR's words link:
"My idea is that instead of going off to some central server antenna, your cell phone signal need go only as far as the next closest cell phone, and that it can then hopscotch onwards from there. It's a little like the way a packet makes its way across the Internet, but with the smarts pushed all the way down, so that there aren't even any high-level routers. Each individual unit acts as a router. This would assume a goodly amount of processing power in the individual phones."
Uvvies appear also in RR's new novel Frek and rhe elixir.
Definition: uvvy: a universal communication device that rests on the back of the user's neck. The uvvy interfaces directly with the user's brain by means of gentle electric currents.
